George John Smith Jr, 90, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away April 11, 2015 at John Knox Care Center. Visitation is 1-2 PM, followed by the funeral service 2 PM on Friday April 17, 2015 at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 700 E. 110th St., Kansas City, MO 64131. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes, Kansas City, MO.
Born February 15, 1925 in Kansas City, MO, he was the son of the late George Smith Sr and Lillian Wolf Smith. He graduated from East High School in 1943 and he served in the army during WW II as PFC from 1943-1946. Returning to the states, he took a job at Hallmark Cards where he met his soon to be wife, Norma. On November 1, 1947, he married Norma Lucille Bowen who preceded him in death on September 30, 2007. He served in the Army Reserves from 1946-1948. At the same time, he attended Cleveland Chiropractic College where he graduated in 1954. He served as Command Sergeant Major in the Missouri National Guard from 1948-1984 and received many citations and decorations during his lifetime military career.
George was a faithful member of St Peter’s UCC, an avid Kansas City Royals fan and enjoyed bowling, gardening, his family and his dogs.
George is survived by two daughters and a son; Barbara Humburg and husband Jim of Nelson, MO; Vicki Soren and husband Wayne of Lake Preston SD and Dennis Smith and wife Tammy of Woodstock, GA; 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephew, and extended family Martin and Vicki Hansen and family. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Kotsifakis; a daughter, Patricia Elaine Hansen; and a grandson, Jayme Soren.
