George Leslie McGowan

During George’s childhood, his family relocated from Waynesville, MO to Independence. While the family had limited funds, there was no shortage of love and family time — an experience that shaped the entirety of his life. George was a dedicated Scout, eventually earning the esteemed honor of Eagle Scout. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1962, where he was a member of the varsity football team.

George had a successful, multi-decade career with Electronic Data Systems (EDS), taking him and his family to Columbia, MO, Painesville, OH, Milwaukee, WI, and St. Louis, MO. Prior to retirement, he held a position at Micron, just outside of Boise, ID.

While hard work was one of his most defining characteristics, George found the greatest value in being a husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed golfing, camping and traveling with those he loved most, especially his wife of 45+ years, Sheryl. George also took great pride in attending his grandchildren's performances and sporting events. An avid sports fan, he cheered loudly for the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and the Mizzou Tigers. He was also a dedicated golfer and country music lover.

George was often quiet but held strong convictions. He was patriotic and steadfast in his belief in Christian values. He had a very dry — and sometimes ornery — sense of humor. George

enjoyed giving back to his community and had a soft spot for children. He served as a youth baseball coach for his children’s teams and volunteered at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis. As a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, George participated in a wide array of service and philanthropic activities. He was the first to lend a hand and, often, the last to leave.

George is survived by his son, Jay McGowan; daughter, Leslie Englund (Ryan); stepson, David Sprague (Jessica); sister, Elain Hubbard (Terry); granddaughter, Hailey Englund; grandsons Dominic Englund, Logan Sprague, Jackson Sprague; and granddaughter, Elise Sprague. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheryl McGowan; father, Leroy McGowan; mother, Esther McGowan; brother, Roy McGowan; sister, Yvonne Shields; and brother, Gary McGowan.

Services for George McGowan will be on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Newcomer's Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Dr., Kansas City, MO. The family will receive visitors at 1:00, with a service at 2:00. All are welcome to attend a reception of remembrance at the funeral home immediately following the service.
