George Evans of Kansas City, MO died peacefully on December 21st at the age of 93. George was preceded in death in 2009 by his wife and soulmate “Dot” to whom he was married for 61 years when Dot passed away. George is survived by his 5 children Patty House (Bill), Georganne Kelly (Kyle), Nancy Kaul (John), Connie Hannan (John), and son Greg Evans (Shannon). George leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his “baby brother” Tom Evans (Norma) of Ft. Pierce, FL.
George was born on Nov. 14, 1923 in Granite City, IL to Godfrey and Ethyl Evans. He and his family experienced the severe hardships related to the Great Depression including his father’s difficulty to find work. After several moves, George’s father eventually landed a job at a steel foundry in Columbus, OH to where the family moved in 1936. George finished high school there and enrolled at Ohio State University where he completed 1 year of studies before being drafted into the army at age 20. After serving in the army he returned to Columbus, enrolled again at Ohio State University, and on his first day back met his future bride, “Dot”.
George married “Dot” at the age of 25. George went to work for Folgers Coffee which was eventually purchased by Procter & Gamble. He retired in 1985 at which time he dove in head over heels to his basement woodworking shop. He became quite the accomplished wood smith and built numerous pieces of furniture and other projects for friends, church, children and grandchildren. He also volunteered for the Laubach society.
In 2009 his friend for life died. In retrospect, those close to him now realize he never truly recovered. George remained in his house and stayed quite healthy until signs of dementia began to surface. After Dot’s death to the time of his passing, George was cared for religiously by his children. Every man should be so lucky to enjoy the level of care and attention his children provided during his last years. As is often the case, George eventually had to move into assisted living facilities. His last stop was Brookdale Senior Living, 12724 State Line Road, where he spent the last 13 months of his life. The level of care there was phenomenal and the family is very grateful to those kind folks.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10:30 am on January 6, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. A lunch/reception will immediately follow the service in the church basement. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Disabled American Veterans - https://www.dav.org, or Brookdale Hospice - https://www.brookdale.com/.../senior-living-solutions/hospice.
