Dave was born on February 25, 1932, to Muriel and Otto Shinn. Dave grew up in Kirksville, Missouri and graduated from the University of Missouri. Several years later he graduated from the William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota and moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he joined the firm of Shook Hardy & Bacon.
Shortly after coming to Kansas City, Dave met Elizabeth (Libby) Elvig. They married in June of 1968 and were happily married for nearly sixty years. Dave and Libby shared a commitment to family and friendship and a love of travel and dancing throughout their marriage.
After twenty-five years at Shook, Hardy, & Bacon, Dave was appointed to serve as a judge in the Jackson County Circuit Court where he served for 20 years, a position he so enjoyed.
Dave was known for his positive attitude, quick wit, and kindness. He was an avid reader and lifelong passionate golfer. He belonged to Blue Hills Country Club for fifty-four years and played well into his eighties. Dave instilled a deep love for the game of golf in his children, Jeff and Stephanie.
Dave is survived by his wife Libby, and their two children, son Jeffrey Shinn (Jann) and daughter Stephanie Greisch (John). He also is survived by son David Shinn, daughter Laura Miller (Larry), daughter Liz Berning (Tom), and John Shinn (Yvette).
We will love and miss him for the rest of our lives.
A celebration of life will be held for Dave at the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace, Kansas City, Missouri 64113.
