David E. Mayta, age 84, died July 16, 2024 in Independence, MO. He was born in Kansas City, MO on November 23, 1939 the son of Dorothea (Montgomery) and Martin Mayta. Dave grew up in Kansas City and attended Milton Moore Elementary, Central Jr. High and graduated from Central Springs High School in 1957. He attained First Letter ROTC Rifle Team. He was in the Army reserves from 1957 to 1965 as Staff Sergeant and reenlisted and served until 1968 having the rank of Sergeant First Class.
He attended Central Christian Church and having accepted Jesus as his Savior, was baptized April 18, 1954
Dave married his high school sweetheart, Betty Louise Johnson, February, 28 1959 and together raised 5 sons until her sudden death June 2, 1977.
Dave worked in the print shop of the KC Police Department from 1958 to 1967 when he began his career as a laser technician with Econ O Pak/Data Laser, retiring in 2004
Dave was on the Board of the Kansas City Public Library for 17 years much of the time as Vice President. He served on the boards of Community Association of the Arts, The Bingham Waggoner Estate, The Vaile Victorian Society, The Citizens Civic and Cultural Committee and most notable PAWS (People for Animal Welfare Society) for 40 years. He also volunteered for a number of other organizations.
He was proud to have his name on many buildings in Independence and Kansas City from either being on a board or contributing money: Plaza Library, Central Library, Dempsey-Parrish building, Uptown Market, Truman Library and Blendwell Café.
Connie and Dave were honored to be nominated by Mayor Reimal to receive the “Missouri Municipal and the City of Independence Award” in 2009 and to be nominated by Mayor Weir for the “Truman Heartland Community Foundation Citizen of the Year for Independence Missouri Award” in 2018
Dave met Connie Harkey volunteering for PAWS and they married on January 23, 1987 and enjoyed many years of volunteering together. Dave was a kind and caring person to people and animals and a devoted husband.
He enjoyed making things out of wood, reading British mystery books, watching old movies on TCM, ”weird shows” on the History channel, and reading about bats and opossums.
Dave is preceded in death by both parents and stepfather Joe Sperl, sons: Kevin and Chris Mayta, brother Dwight and sister in law Mary Jo, sister Doris and brother in law Tony Pecoraro, nephew Tom Mayta and many pet cats and dogs.
He is survived by his wife Connie Mayta, sons Mark Mayta,( Lorie) Scott (Lori) Mayta and Todd Mayta (Papri Barman) 9 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, nieces and nephew, Goddaughter Dr. DeAngela Burns- Wallace and dog Lil’ Dude, and beloved cats.
