Carroll D. Esry (“Mr. C”), 87, passed away from Covid-19 on January 7, 2021, in Sarasota, Florida. He was born August 26, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri to Amos and Olive Esry, who preceded him in death. Carroll grew up in Independence, Missouri and graduated in 1951 from William Chrisman High School and then earned his business degree from The University of Kansas in 1955. After college, he served in the United States Army.
Carroll married Nancy Reich of Independence on February 2, 1957, and they were blessed with three children, William, David and Marcie. Following his service in the Army, he and Nancy returned to Independence. He had dreams of becoming a pro-bowler, but both of their fathers thought it better that he find a job! He went to work at Bendix, and after six months he began working for A. Reich and Sons in Kansas City. After five years, he went into the insurance business with his father and brother. Carroll earned his CLU designation. In the early 1970’s he became a partner in Comtronics, a communications provider and retired in 1994.
Carroll was very active in the tennis circuit, competing and coaching, even representing the United States on a People to People international tennis tour in Europe. One of his proudest moments was when his daughter, Marcie, became Missouri State Singles Champion in 1978.
Carroll and Nancy opened a new chapter in their life by splitting time in Sarasota, Florida following his retirement. Boating quickly became an activity they enjoyed together. Carroll approached boating with the same zest with which he approached life, becoming certified as a Captain. He used these nautical skills for many Field Club boat cruises, which took them to Key West, the Bahamas and many other beautiful, shorelined places.
Carroll had a big, friendly presence and touched many lives. A devout Christian, he began the practice of gifting Jesus Calling daily devotional books and gave out hundreds in recent years. Carroll was a consummate host, ensuring his guests were always comfortable and their wine glasses were always full. His greatest joy was spending time with family, especially the grandchildren, of whom he was so proud. He will be missed by many close friends.
Carroll was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Nancy, his parents, his brother Bill and wife Trudy, and his faithful four-legged companion JayJay. Carroll will live on in the hearts of his children, William C. (Jill), David R. (Nancy), Marcie and his grandchildren Michael (Laura), Ellie (Brian), Jordan, Lauren and Katelyn.
Plans for a Celebration of Life are pending. The family suggests contributions in Carroll’s honor to the Heart of America Council Boy Scouts (10210 Holmes Road; KCMO 64131); Church of the Palms, Stephen Ministry, (3224 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, FL 34239)
