Carolyn Sue Mitchell (Whittle), 80, Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2015 at St. Joseph Medical Center. Visitation from 6-8pm Wed., June 17th with Rosary prayed at 6pm at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church, 8941 James A. Reed Road, KCMO. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Thurs., June 18th at the church with burial following at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Carolyn was born on February 15, 1935 in Sedalia, MO, the daughter of Mary Lucille & Orville W. Whittle. The Whittles moved to Kansas City, MO in 1945. Carolyn graduated from the Loretto Academy in 1952, briefly attended Donnelly College & graduated from Mount St. Scholastica (now Benedictine) College in 1956. She met John P. (Jack) Mitchell at Donnelly College & they married on June 21, 1958. Carolyn taught in public school for three years before resigning to raise a family. Carolyn & Jack had three sons: Steven Michael, born April 20, 1959; Robert Alan, born November 9, 1961; and John William, born March 14, 1964. Carolyn returned to teaching in 1967 at St. John Francis Regis Catholic School in Kansas City, MO, where she taught the First & Second Grades until her retirement in 1995. Carolyn stayed active by volunteering at the Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Regis Church & joining the Red Hatters. Carolyn was a faith-filled woman of grace, wisdom & generosity. She was an incredible teacher who inspired numerous young lives with her bright smile, warm words & nurturing love. She dedicated her life in service to others and always went the extra mile for anyone & everyone. She loved gardening, card games and good times with family & friends.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Lucille & Orville Whittle. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jack; her sons, Steve (Anna), Lee’s Summit, MO, Bob (Maureen), Leawood, KS & John (Kristen), Raymore, MO; brother, William W. Whittle (Susan), Winston-Salem, NC; 7 grandchildren, Brenna, Aaron, Claire, Mikaela, Andy, Chris & Maggie and many nieces & nephews. She is also survived by her many friends that she loved dearly & the hundreds of students that she was proud and happy to have taught.
