Barbara was born in Kansas City MO on August 4, 1935, to Glenn and Emma Carter. She attended UMKC where she earned a bachelor’s degree and was selected as a "Who's Who" student her senior year. She married John E. Averill Jr in 1959, they were married for 31 years until his death in 1990 and have two children.
She worked for Bendix Corporation in the personnel department until she left to be a stay-at-home mother. She rejoined the work force as a part time florist when her children started school. Barbara went on to achieve her master’s degree in science from Avila University in 1998. John and Barbara were active in The Kansas City Archeology Club for many years. Barbara volunteered at the Trailside Center, was a lifelong avid reader, enjoyed book clubs and inspiring others to read.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Kay (Jim) Tipton, her son Bruce Averill, daughter Amy (Stuart) Joines, grandson Jonathan Joines, her niece Kay (Stephen) Hunsley, nephew Mike (Sabrena) Tipton and great nieces/nephews Luke, Sarah, Sean, Killian, Alexander, Grace, and Daniel. She is preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Emma Carter, husband John Averill, brother-in-law Jim Tipton and great-nephew Mark Hunsley.
A celebration visitation for Barbara will be held Friday, September 29, 2023 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
