Thelma McCowan, 85, of Basehor, Kansas, passed away December 19, 2016 at home surrounded by family. Memorial services will be 6:00 p.m., Friday, December 23, 2016 at Chapel Hill - Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, KS 66112. Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice.
Thelma was born September 13, 1931 in Park, Kansas to Martin and Mary Schoenfeld. She lived in a sod house growing up and attended a one-room schoolhouse. Thelma worked hard on her family farm growing up, working the hay field and helping in the garden. This turned to a life-long love of gardening and flowers, she made her own tomato juice, home-made jellies and cottage cheese. Thelma had several recipes that she was famous for, especially her dressing. Thelma and her husband, Forrest married on May 18, 1948. She raised five boys and her family and home were her greatest joys.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Mary Schoenfeld; and her siblings, Jacob Schoenfeld, Katherine Leiker, and Doris Teeters.
Thelma is survived by her husband of 68 years, Forrest J. McCowan of Basehor, KS; her children, Kenneth McCowan and his wife Zelda of Kansas City, KS, Dennis McCowan and his wife Deborah of Kansas City, KS, Forrest McCowan of Basehor, KS, Gary McCowan and his wife Sandra of Kansas City, KS, and Randall McCowan of Basehor, KS; siblings, Alice Mueller of Shawnee, KS, Irene Coulter of Hoxie, KS, Ruby McCowan of El Dorado Springs, MO, and Roy and Jeanette McCowan of Conway, MO; nine grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
