Robert “Junior” Burks, 90, of KCK went to heaven Nov. 6, 2013. He died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. A visitation will be held Mon., Nov. 11th from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill-Butler, 701 N 94th St., KCK. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Hospice, 3100 Broadway Street #1000, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.
Junior was born Aug. 5, 1923 in Capps, MO. He met his future wife when they were children in school. Junior left the family farm in Tuscumbia, MO and later joined the military. He moved to the KCK area in 1947. Junior was later joined by and married to Erma Lee (Whalen) Burks in 1952. He was a member of the carpenters union as a concrete worker, laying foundations, and retired as a foreman in 1985. Junior’s hobbies were fixing tires and sports. He was an avid outdoorsman, always going fishing and hunting. Junior’s personality was one of calm, generosity and sharing. He was strong of heart and honest in spirit.
Junior was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Esther Burks of Miller County, MO; his wife, Erma; 4 sisters, Opal Burks, Lorene Bond, Helen Birdsong and Agnes Vaccaro. He leaves behind, a brother, Joe Burks of Shawnee, KS; sisters, Bonnie Presswood of Granite City, Ill and Nina Atwell of Olean, MO; sister-in-law, Glenda L. Munson of KCK and nephew J.R. Munson of KCK. He also leaves behind many other loving family members, numerous loyal friends and church family where he attended Calvary Chapel P.C.G. of KCK. We all will be together again, ‘til then we’ll miss you so very much.
