Richard Calvin Baker, 90, passed away February 17, in New Rochelle, New York. Born January 31, 1934 in Kansas City, MO, to parents Luther and Elva Mae Baker, Dick was the first member of his family to attend college, receiving a Masters in education from the University of Missouri.
He joined the Army in 1956 and held a succession of jobs in service to his country. After working as a Spanish teacher in North Kansas City, he worked at the US consulate in São Paulo, Brazil in the late 60s. After returning to the United States, he taught high school Spanish in the Washington, DC area and, in later years, ran a small translation firm called PS2E: “Portuguese and Spanish to English.”
Dick is survived by longtime companion Betty Sweet, children Michelle Schlight, Gregory Baker (Stacey), Marta Garrett (Michael) , Chuck Baker (Samantha) and Erica Winter (Brian), four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and former spouse, Nesira.
A small graveside service will be held to honor his memory at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas on March 30, 2024, at 11 am.
