Mary A. Stevens, 89, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2019. Funeral services will be 3:00pm, Friday, Feb. 8, 2019 at Chapel Hill – Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, KS 66112, with visitation from 2:00-3:00pm preceding the service. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Mary was born December 8, 1929 in Myron, Arkansas to William and Susie Hastings. She grew up in Arkansas and graduated from Violet Hill and Baker University. Mary was joined in marriage to Ernest N. Stevens on March 5, 1951. They later moved to the Kansas City area, where she taught for USD 500 for over 50 years, and retired after 37 years at White Church Elementary. Mary was a member of Sunset Hills Christian Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Susie Hastings; her husband of 49 years, Ernest N. Stevens; and her brother, Wilbur Hastings.
Mary is survived by her three children, Marshia Diane Sanders (Larry), Susan Marie Elmore (Nick), and Gary Neil Stevens (Victoria) all of the Greater KC area; her eight grandchildren, Melissa Kaye Blair, Jason Wesley Cook, Jesse T. Cook, Mark Anthony Cook, Nicholas Neil Cook, Robert Joseph Lamb, Caden Joseph Stevens, and Haylie Marie Hughes, all of the Greater KC area; her four great-grandchildren, Colan D. Cook, Zoey Raelyn Hecker, Bryson Dean Grippando, and Kelsey Diane Grippando; her two great great-grandchildren, Ja’Kazlynn Thompson, and Ja’Kenleigh Thompson; her brother, Donald Hastings (Myrlene); and her family friend, Analice Janea Reyes.
