James W. Serrano, “Jim,” of Westwood, KS, was born October 6, 1956 in Kansas City, KS to Paul E. and Josephine Serrano and died February 13, 2014 at KU Medical Center with his loving family by his side. James was the proud father of Leslie (Joe) Yoest and Eric (Kyla) Serrano. Papa Jim will live in the hearts of “his boys,” grandsons, R.J., Braxton and Zachary Yoest and Marshall and Oscar Serrano. He also leaves his brothers Tom (Kathy) and Raymond (Becky) Serrano and his sisters Joella (Jim) Young, Pauline (Ken) Carpio and Mary (Mary Riddell) Serrano, his sister-in-law Lynne Serrano, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren and countless friends, Suzanne Brooks and the Segura family. He was preceded in death and is greeted in heaven by his parents, his sister Ramona Lou, his brothers Anthony and Paul, Jr. and his brother-in-law Ray Segura, Jr.
James graduated from the Cathedral of St. Peter Grade School and Bishop Ward High School and attended Donnelly College. In 2013, he retired from the UPS after 40 years of dedicated service. Jim was a loyal Teamster. Jim was the ultimate K-State Wildcat fan; always sporting purple pride and he was a long-time member of the Holy Family Social Club.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, February 16th at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., KCK 66112, with a Rosary to be prayed at 4:00 p.m. Jim was a faithful Catholic and a member of St. Agnes Parish, 5250 Mission Rd., Roeland Park, KS 66205, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., February 17th, followed by Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.
Jim and his family are so grateful for the loving and compassionate care he received over the last 12 years at KU Medical Center, especially the BMT Clinic, Units 41 and 42 and the Palliative Care Team. To honor Jim, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 6811 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee Mission, Kansas 66202 or the BMT Clinic at KU, 3901 Rainbow Blvd, Kansas City, KS 66160 in his name. James will be remembered for his love of life, his loyalty to family and friends, his courage facing his illness and his infectious smile. “God love you Jimmy.”
