Donald “Don” Edward Gray, 92, of KCK passed away Thursday, October 23rd, 2014. A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 28th from 12:00-1:30PM with the funeral service at 1:30PM at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., KCKS 66112. Interment will follow services at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to Crossroads Hospice, 14310 E. 42nd St. South, Unit 600, Independence, MO 64055.
Don was born April 14, 1922 in Dayton, OH to Charles and Edith Gray. He lived in Dayton until he turned 25 and moved to KCK. He served in the United States Navy from November 1942 until December 25th, 1945. He was assigned to USS Walker and served in the Atlantic and S. Pacific Oceans. Don and his crew members were involved in numerous battles and were often fire support for larger ships. He married the love of his life, Phyllis Nail on November 8, 1947. Don worked as a Master Carpet Layer for Lawless & Johnson before retirement in 1984. He was a lifetime member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the KCK Moose Lodge. Don prided himself on his health and was a life-long runner, often running up to 5 miles at one time. Don was an avid golfer and loved to do so with his son and grandson, often reminding people there were 3 generations golfing together. Don enjoyed fishing in his free time and he and his friends went on annual fishing trips to Canada.
Don is preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Begley; brother, Chuck Gray; and granddaughter, Crystal Frenick. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Phyllis; son, Don (Cindy) Gray; daughters, Candy (Richard) Anderson & Diane (Paul) Skidmore; grandchildren, Shane Ruppel, Brett Gray, Sara (Jason) Coffey, Rachel (Ray) Wyrick, Megan (Scott) Shepherd & Hugh Skidmore; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Joan Gray of Dayton, OH.
