Charles Bernard Knapp, Jr., 90, of Kansas City, Kansas passed away Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Kansas City Hospice House. Private family services will be held and a later burial at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Charles was born September 16, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri to Charles and Louise Knapp. He attended school through the eighth grade and got special permission to enlist in the Merchant Marines in 1944 at the age of 16. Chuck served in the Pacific Campaign until the war ended in 1945. He married the future Frances Lydia Knapp in 1949. Chuck worked as a switchman for Katy Railroad and later Union Pacific for many years, retiring in 1989. He was an active member of the Union while at the railroad. Chuck was also active in the American Legion and the Merchant Marines. He was an avid collector, especially military memorabilia and was a movie buff.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances in 2010; and his daughter, Cindy Knapp Carter.
Chuck is survived by four sons, Charles B. Knapp, III and his wife Betty, Don Knapp and his wife Sharon, Steve Knapp, and Frank Knapp; his grandchildren, Carly Eastling, Jennifer Riggs, Katie Schleicher, Jimmy Dale Hunt, John Hunt, Amanda “Mindy” Kenyon, Brita Horton, Mark Jensen, Lori Yslas, Shawna Knapp, Jeffrey Knapp, Brandon Knapp, and Adam Knapp; as well as twenty-two great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
