Cecil D. "Wayne" Sturgeon, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Tonganoxie Nursing Center. Graveside services will be at 9:00 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2011 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas. Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Cecil was born November 15, 1929 to William Ray and Linnie Mae (Smith) Sturgeon in Oxford, Indiana. He joined the Air Force when he was 18 and served a majority of his time in the Korean War in Fox Peter One, 308 Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Wing. Achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant, Cecil was part of the first mass jet transport across the Pacific. After his military service, Cecil moved to the Kansas City area where he worked as a mechanic for T.W.A. for 35 years. Cecil was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a life member of the Tri-County Rod & Gun Club and the Wyandotte Bow Hunters. He ran archery programs and demonstrations and both he and his wife were involved in archery competitions. Cecil had many hobbies: he loved hunting, fishing, target shooting, bowling, golfing, ping pong and he even built his own canoe at one point.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ray and Linnie Mae Sturgeon and his wife Mary Teresa Sturgeon, who passed in 2002.
Cecil is survived by his four children, Dave Sturgeon of Shreveport, Louisiana, Greg Sturgeon of Kansas City, Kansas, Sharon Vokins of Lawrence, Kansas and Richard Sturgeon of Los Alamos, New Mexico, one brother Raymond D. Sturgeon of Bedford, Massachusetts, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
