Vera Mills, who was a testament to the power of love, shaping every moment she shared with those around her, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2024 in Kamloops, British Columbia, at the age of 93 years.
Born on Finnson Farm on the shores of Little Quill Lake in Saskatchewan, Vera was one of fourteen children welcomed into the world by Nick and Annie Pylatuk. Her youth was rich, filled with the simple joys of farm living, music, and the nurturing warmth of a large family. Her early memories were filled with 2-mile walks to a one-room schoolhouse, working alongside her mother in the kitchen, and singing songs with her father while he played the fiddle.
Vera's life took a joyful turn when she met her husband, Colin. She was captivatingly beautiful with a feisty twinkle in her eye, and for Colin, it was love at first sight. Noticing she was to be seated next to his friend rather than beside him, Colin quickly adjusted the seating arrangements to make sure she was by his side. This sleight-of-hand trick would spark a love lasting over fifty years.
Together, they raised their three children, Janet, William, and Joan, transitioning from Regina to Fort Saint John, where they launched a successful real estate and insurance business. But the Thompson-Okanagan sunshine called to them, where they first moved to Osoyoos, eventually finding their forever home in Kamloops. Vera loved the city’s rustic charm, reminding her of the towns sung about in old country and western songs that she loved to hum. To her, it would always be a place filled with adventure.
Vera’s love for travel, art, and music filled her life, yet her greatest happiness was found in the company of her family. She cherished the times spent in the kitchen and around the dinner table, playing dress-up with her grand (and great-grand) children, and sharing songs and stories that connected generations.
Her legacy is immeasurable, not defined by material possessions but by the profound impact of her love and the memories she leaves behind. Her home was a haven, filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals, the sound of laughter, and the warmth of her heart. It was a place where many of us met, a place where some of us ran to, and a place where everyone was welcomed.
Survived by her devoted children Janet (Jack) Salvino, William (Joy) Mills, and Joan (Peter) Guido; her cherished grandchildren Jacqueline (Shaunn) Salvino, Kathleen (Ian) Walden, Nathaniel (Lisa) Guido, and Tessa (Ryan) Guido; her great-granddaughters Miabella Salvino and Madison Guido; her siblings Florence Schaufler, David (Liz) Pylatuk, and June (Ron) Leslie; and many nieces and nephews.
Vera was predeceased by her husband, R.Colin Mills, her grandsons Joshua Guido and Nicholas Guido, her parents, and several siblings.
Vera’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Ponderosa Lodge staff for their compassionate care and love towards Vera in her final days, along with the support and kindness they’ve shown her family.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Kamloops Art Gallery, honoring Vera’s lifelong passion for painting.
Vera, deeply missed, will be forever cherished in our hearts, her legacy guiding us with warmth, joy, and the enduring beauty of a life well-loved.
