May 15, 1931 – February 22, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Phyllis Makuch, who passed away peacefully at Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre in Kamloops on February 22, 2024.
Phyllis Irene Rogers was born on May 15, 1931, in Moose Jaw, SK, the only child of Thomas Forshaw Rogers and Irene Rose Rogers (née Bartlam). After graduating from high school, she married Frank David Cant, with whom she had five children. She raised her family in Moose Jaw while pursuing a fulfilling career as a psychiatric nurse, supporting children with disabilities.
After Frank’s death, Phyllis married John Makuch and moved to St. Thomas, ON, for many years before they retired to Winnipeg, MB. Phyllis and John were married for 26 years, and after John’s passing in 2004, Phyllis relocated to Kamloops, BC, to be closer to her children and grandchildren. It was in Kamloops that Phyllis adopted Cinnamon, a sweet-tempered rescue dog from the SPCA. Cinnamon brought Phyllis so much joy in her later years.
Phyllis loved handcrafts, fibre arts, and gardening. She had a great love for dogs, was a voracious reader, and a whiz at all forms of puzzles.
Phyllis is predeceased by her son, Paul Richard “Rick” Cant (Donna). She is survived by her children, David (Joanne), Ted (Marlene), Janet (Ed), and Robin (Judy); her six grandchildren, Heather, Ian, Darren, Foxx, Ali (Erin), Gordon (Kara), and Christina (Dustin); and her six great-grandchildren, Kyle, Dillan, Charlie, Payton, Octavia, and baby Isabel, who is not yet a month old.
The family would like to thank Karen Desormeau, Chris Perrier, and the staff at Interior Homecare and Gemstone for their excellent care of Phyllis, our beloved matriarch. We will miss her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Kamloops SPCA.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Schoening Funeral Service.
