It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary James Lillow on October 7th, 2024, at the age of 73. Stubborn to the core and funny to the bone, Gary lived life on his own terms, leaving a lasting impression on anyone lucky enough to cross his path. Whether it was his quick-witted one-liners, playful pranks, or unwavering opinions, you always knew where you stood with him—and you were probably laughing. His laugh was infectious, his stories legendary, and his ability to turn the most ordinary moment into an unforgettable experience was truly unmatched.
Born in Peterborough, Ontario, Gary moved to Kamloops at the age of 11, where he grew up learning the art of doing things his way. He may not have always taken the easiest road, but he sure made it the most interesting. Friends and family could attest that if you gave Gary two choices, he'd make up a third just to keep things lively.
His tenacity was only matched by his heart. Beneath his tough exterior was a man who would do anything for the people he loved. From showing up when it mattered most to making you laugh when you least expected it, Gary had a way of making everyone feel special. He showed us the importance of finding humor in life, no matter how tough things got.
Predeceased by his parents, Pearl and Lavern, and his six siblings—Mona, Valeska, Irma, Donald, Danny, and Carolyn—Gary leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and many stories that will be told at family gatherings for years to come. He is survived by his wife, Leslie, and their three children: Brad (Jen), Kirstin (Steve), and Curtis (Gillian); his daughter, Kim; his three grandchildren, Deacon, Parker, and Hobbs; and numerous family members across B.C. and Ontario who will forever cherish his memory and his unique way of making life a little more colorful, to put it lightly.
Gary enjoyed a long career as an electrician with the IBEW. However, he was happiest outdoors—fishing, camping, and of course, cooking a "garbage can turkey" surrounded by family and friends. He also enjoyed numerous trips to Mexico with his closest friends.
Though he may no longer be with us in person, his humor, love, and laughter will remain in our hearts forever. His legacy lives on in the countless laughs, inside jokes, and memories he leaves behind with his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, you lovable, funny, one-of-a-kind guy. You will be missed but not forgotten.
A celebration of Gary's life will be held on October 24th, 2024, at Tumbleweeds Pub in Kamloops from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you do something to make Gary smile: crack a joke, stand your ground, or take the road less traveled.
