Born in Annapolis, Maryland on May 23, 1955, Charlie spent his whole life enjoying the outdoors. As a member of the The Annapolis and Tred Avon Yacht Clubs, The Admirals Cove Club, The Palm Beach Yacht Club, and The Ocean Reef Club, he was an intrepid sailor racing with Ted Turner in 1971 and 1973 on the American Eagle. Charlie was a passionate hunter, fisherman and avid student of history. Upon graduation from Annapolis High School, Charlie started Yacht Maintenance Company, purchasing in 1978, the former Cambridge Shipyard in Maryland, to grow Yacht Maintenance into the successful marine services facility that it is today. Charlie had an unparalleled zest for life and lived each day with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He was loyal to his family and friends and was loved by many.
Charlie is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Elizabeth Fago Smith; his stepchildren Paul Walczak (Patti), Stephanie Walczak, Joseph Fago (Jamie); four step grandchildren Abigail, Alexandra, Addison, and Elizabeth; his parents, Charles R. Smith Jr. and Ann Carr Smith; his sisters, Jane Smith Hall (Jeffrey) and Lisa Smith McCarl (Clayton); nieces and nephews Jonathan Hall, Clayton McCarl (Lindsay) and Ashley McCarl Harrison (Rachid) and Drew McCarl.

A Memorial Reception will be held in Florida on March 26 at 5:00 P.M. at Elizabeth and Charlie's home at 372 Regatta Drive, Jupiter, Florida 33477. A Memorial Service will be held in Oxford, Maryland on March 28, 2015 at Holy Trinity Church at 3:00 P.M. with a reception immediately following at their home at 5391 Morgans Point Road, Oxford, Maryland.
