We will miss Gene faithfully laboring in the trenches at Clayton State University. I had the distinct privilege of serving as both his colleague and immediate supervisor. He never shirked his duties, despite teaching a heavy load, with many of his history classes on MWF mornings, back-to-back-to-back. A short time ago, I discovered his archived guest appearance on  "Antique Roadshow" in Savannah in 2003, during which he presented  his genuine and rare Joe Brown Pike. He inspired me to be a better military historian, regaling me with stories of his time as a cadet at VMI and as a Warrant officer in Vietnam. Thank you, Gene, for your service and for spending some time with us.

Gene was an officer and gentleman in finest tradtion of VMI.  He was a kind human being and a true friend to me.  He was also a respected colleague at Clayton State University.  I will miss the hours spent with him and there will be none would could replace the comraderie we shared.  May he rest in peace.  Martha you are in our prayers.   Herb and Sharon Hammond

The roar and smoke from Gene's Enfield will be missed in the reenactments in Winchester, VA., as will his devotion to Southern history.   I will miss this gentleman and soldier...

Gene will certainly be missed by his friends and family.  He was a good neighbor to my Dad, Ed Langley and my mother, Elaine.  Please know our love and prayers are with you, Martha and your family as well. Martha and John Lappington and Ed Langley.

I could always count on Gene to cut thru the all the junk and give it to me straight. He was a wealth of knowledge, but with a humility and humor that made it palatable even when he was proving me wrong. I pray Gods grace and peace bring comfort to his sweet family.
