Thomas Jefferson Evans Sr.

Family will receive friends on Monday, August 7, 2023, from 10 until 11 a.m., at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Service will follow at 11 a.m., in the Kilgore-Green Chapel, with burial at Walker Memory Gardens. Rev. John Jaye will officiate.

Thomas was born and raised in Walker County. He attended and graduated from Walker County High School in 1957. He married Betty Musgrove Evans on December 26, 1959 and they were married for 63 years. He served in the U.S. Navy for eight years and served one year in Vietnam. He attended the University of Alabama where he earned his BS MA and PHD degrees in Education. Dr. Evans began teaching at Hueytown High School in 1965 and continued teaching for the rest of his life. In 1970, Dr. Evans was ordained into the ministry and served as Pastor and Interim Pastor. Dr. Evans served in the United States Army Reserve until retirement at the rank of LT. Colonel.

He retired from Jefferson County Board of Education in 1992, but continued teaching at various institutions for 20 plus years. Dr. Evans enjoyed farming, gardening and raising mules, cows and horses. He always supported his son’s activities and education, as well as his grandchildren. He “PawPaw T.J.” had the opportunity to meet and enjoy his five great grandchildren - Gus Hammonds, Rhueby Hammonds, Danny Evans, Maia Evans and Malena Tinajero.

Dr. Evans was a big fan and supporter of Hueytown High School Baseball. He enjoyed watching all University of Alabama athletic events, especially football.

He was preceded in death by his son Thomas J. Evans Jr.; granddaughter, Rebekah Evans, Parents, Coye and Ruth Evans; sister, Florene Randolph; and brothers, James Evans and Jack Evans.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Musgrove Evans; sons, Dan Evans (Gwendolyn) and Mike Evans (Melinda); grandchildren, Andy Evans (Jacinda), Jarred Evans (Molly), Rob Evans (RaLeigh), Reagan Tinajera (Erick), Will Evans, Randy Evans, Emma Evans, Ann Michael Evans; five great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A special thank you to the wonderful care provided at the Colonel Robert L Howard State Veterans Home and Lakeside Hospice of Pell City.

Even though “The Leader of the Band” is in a better place, he will be greatly missed. His legacy will live on through his family. We all love you, T.J., Dad and Paw Paw T.J.
