Wolfgang was born on February 2, 1949, in Wiesbaden, Germany to Karl Heinz Schumacher and Ottilie Schumacher. Sadly, his parents passed away when he was 5. He was adopted by his father’s sister and her husband, Liliane J. Leonard and John (Jack) Clay Leonard, Jr.
Wolfgang, known to most simply as Wolf, grew up in Kensington, Maryland. He loved to read and excelled in school, usually making the honor roll. His education continued after high school where he attended the University of Virginia, Charlottesville graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1971. While attending the University of Virginia he enrolled in the ROTC program. He intended to follow in his adopted father’s footsteps, a Navy veteran who served in WWII and the Korean war. After graduation, Wolf enlisted in the Navy. He completed all the orientation and was assigned to the Navy ship USS Josephus Daniels, a Belknap-class destroyer leader/cruiser. While in the service he received the National Defense Service Medal. He retired from the Navy as Lieutenant JG in July 1977.
He met his first wife, Bridget, in Virginia Beach. Wolf’s love of the ocean motivated them to move to the beautiful island of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Soon after the move, Wolf & Bridget went through a very tough time losing a child at birth and this led to their separation and eventual divorce. Wolf settled in on St. Thomas and bought a sailboat which he named the “Touch of Class”. Wolf loved animals and adopted a dog named Sheba, lived on the boat, and loved chartering trips. Wolf and Sheba were inseparable and helped fill an emotional gap. Wolf kept busy by also managing vacation properties & was an accountant for a real estate firm. He met his future wife Julianna during this busy time. Julianna was a Kiwi or New Zealander. She loved photography and gardening. They were happy together. Julianna passed away from the complications of an accident. Wolf decided to stay on St. Thomas until two hurricanes destroyed his home and the real estate firm he worked for. Wolf’s next transition brought him to Jacksonville, FL. He found work as an accountant and enjoyed the warm weather. He lived with our brother Patrick, which was only a block from our mom & dad. It was like going back to childhood again except for no snow. Soon after his arrival in Jacksonville, Wolf became friends with a local, Charles (Chuck) Johnson. He & Wolf had many things in common and he became a loyal friend to Wolf and our family. Wolf is survived by his brother John (Jack) Clay Leonard III of Woodbine, Maryland, and several cousins.
