William Marion Lane

William Marion Lane, 89, of Jacksonville passed away at Memorial Hospital on April 1, 2014. He had been retired since 1990 from the ILCU. Prior to that he had a long career as a US customs agent. He had a active military career as well, both active and reserves. From 1942-45 he was a Army Ranger and took part in D-Day at Omaha Beach, where he was initially wounded. He then fought his way across Europe until he was wounded the second time at the Battle of the Bulge and captured by the Nazis. After enduring a brutal captivity he was freed by American forces at the end of the war. Subsequently he joined the Navy Reserve in 1949 and served with them until 1984. His honorable and long military career included many leadership and instructor roles. He then came home and married his girlfriend and the love of his life Marian Stilley and started his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved Marian and beautiful daughter Pamela. Survivors are his son William M. Lane Jr, his grand-children Jim Thompson Jr, Amber Flint, Angela Lind, Jeremiah D. Thompson, and Chi'ane Lane. He had 11 great grand-children. He was an "uncle" to many more and well known as PawPaw. He was a Mason, and a member of First Baptist Church and a generous benefactor to many charities. The service will be held at Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home 7242 Normandy Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32205, (904) 781-9262 on April 7, 2014. Family viewing from 12-1PM, guests from 1-2, the service at 2pm. There will be a pot luck dinner from 5-7 PM at the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville afterwards. Entombment will be in Riverside Memorial Park with full military honors. His long life touched many people positively. He was a very good and humble man who loved his family and his country.
