Bill Turner was 90 years old when he passed away on March 26, 2024. He was born in Jacksonville, FL, and was graduated from Duncan U. Fletcher High School in 1952. Following in his father’s footsteps, he studied Civil Engineering at Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn, AL. He was a brother of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. It was there he met his future wife, Norma Jane York. He was graduated in 1957 and immediately entered the Army for two years with the Engineering Research Development Lab, serving at Ft. Belvoir, VA.
Returning to Jacksonville, he began a 30+ year career working first for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, where he was known as Bo Turner. He retired from CSX Transportation in 1994. During his retirement years, he was an active volunteer income tax preparer and instructor with AARP, served on the Architectural Review Committee at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club, and enjoyed playing golf and traveling with family and friends.
Bill was one of the founding members of Chets Creek Church on Hodges Blvd. in Jacksonville, FL, and enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher to toddlers, assisting with the sound system during worship services, and serving on the Counting Committee. He went on many mission trips with the church to Nicaragua and Brazil.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Jefferson and Mary (Grant) Turner, his brother, James Grant Turner, his son, William Jefferson Turner, III, his daughter-in-law, Kandi Lee Turner, and his beloved wife of 66 ½ years, Jane York Turner. He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Turner Brauda (Larry), Laura Turner Jackson (Billy), Julie Turner Riley (Wendell), eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A patriotic celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at 3 PM at Chets Creek Church, 4420 Hodges Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32224. Jane Turner passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 25, 2024, at 87 ½ years old. She was born in Birmingham, AL, and was graduated from Ensley High School in 1954. She studied Clothing and Textiles in the Home Economics Department at Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn, AL. She was a sister of Phi Mu fraternity. It was there she met her future husband, William Jefferson Turner, Jr. She was graduated in 1957 and was an elementary school teacher.
Jane and Bill moved frequently during his time with the railroad and she always found a church home for the family. She enjoyed cooking and sewing for her four children. She served in many leadership and service roles, and was a dedicated student and teacher of the Bible. She was an active volunteer income tax preparer with AARP and enjoyed greeting and helping repeat clients. Jane was one of the founding members of Chets Creek Church on Hodges Blvd. in Jacksonville, FL. She was a Life Group Leader, helped with Vacation Bible School, and served on the Counting Committee.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, August Roswell and Ethel (Davis) York, her sister, Augusta York Kracke, and her son, William Jefferson Turner, III, and her daughter-in-law, Kandi Lee Turner. She was survived by her beloved husband of 66 ½ years, William Jefferson Turner, Jr. for a day. She is survived by her daughters, Pamela Turner Brauda (Larry), Laura Turner Jackson (Billy), Julie Turner Riley (Wendell), eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
