Virginia "Shug" Hicks

Virginia Carroll “Shug” Hicks was born May 15, 1927 in Norfolk, VA to Lydia Halstead Carroll and Robert Dahl Carroll. She died peacefully on May 26, 2015 surrounded by her 3 daughters. Shug was raised in Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School in 1946. While in high school, she began working for the telephone company where she retired after 43 years of service. On February 22, 1947, she married the love of her life, Dave Hicks. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage until Dave’s passing in 1998.

Shug is survived by daughters Linda, Carroll and Sherry and her #1 son-in-law, Don; grandchildren, Natalie, Evan, Austin, Amy and Linley and great-granddaughters, Ava and Olivia. Shug was a member of Mandarin United Methodist Church where she volunteered regularly. Her love of Jesus allowed her to be a friend to all and she had a gift of making everyone feel special. Shug was much loved by everyone and never met a stranger.

Visitation will be form 5-7pm on Sunday, May 31 in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. The Funeral will be at 11:00am on Monday, June 1 in Mandarin United Methodist Church, 11270 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32223 followed by interment at Mandarin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mandarin United Methodist Church or Community Hospice.
