Verna met the love of her life, Charles Spencer, in Wilmington, NC. They were married on February 17, 1948. In 1960 the family was transferred to Jacksonville with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. She was a member of Ft. Caroline Christian Church where she was well known for her baked goods and fish fries. She enjoyed doing crafts, and playing bingo and cards with her friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years; her grandson, Eric Kimball; and 3 brothers, Otis, Jack and Lek. She is survived by her daughters, Charlene (Jack) Bruggner, Sharon Kimball and Dianne (Ronnie) Cox; grandchildren, Marc (Casey) Kimball, Brian (Katie) Bruggner, Tim (Rhonda) Bruggner, Lisa Bruggner, Ron (Stacey) Cox and Jeremy (Nicole) Cox; great grandchildren, Kharma Bruggner, Cohen Kimball and Layla Cox; brother, Edsel; and sisters, Alice and Margaret.
Visitation will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday, May 29 at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place at 9:30am on Wednesday, May 30 at Ft. Caroline Christian Church, 7535 Ft. Caroline Rd., 32277 with interment to follow at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Memory Gardens.
