As a youngster she would always recall of her time spent with older cousins in Orlando. She graduated from Landon Sr High School and was one of the famed Lionette Drill Team.
She married William A Hawley Jr. after World War 2 on November 7, 1950 at Swain Methodist Church. She continued with her banking career at American National Bank and Florida National Bank. She was a full-time wife, mother and friend who loved to travel, road trip, Camp and Motor Home at the drop of a hat. She was ready to go…
She loved spending time with her husband Bill and the Hawley family at the house on Mill Cove.
Mom was a Girl Scout Leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, Baseball Coach, Swim Instructor and member of the Arlington Chapter Eastern Star. She prided herself on hiking the Appalachians Trail twice. One time with a backpack on the trail for 3 or 4 days. She cruised the Bahamas, went to Cuba, and Bless her heart she went to Australia and New Zealand on her own.
She took pride in her sons and grandchildren who took up a career serving the Military in the United States Coast Guard branch and traveled to many destinations that they were stationed in to support them in their service.
Mom loved to Square Dance. One day her friend Zelda came and said they were going to go Square Dancing. Dad did not want to go but she made him go anyways. That was the highlight of mom’s weekends going to a Barn Dance at a Campground and showing others the fun of simple campfires around their motor homes at the different campgrounds. She loved traveling with Rodney, Pat, Janet, and Bobby her best friends.
The kids in the neighborhood knew her as Ms. Hawley (Aunt Shirley). She loved to see the neighborhood kids playing sports in the field. Mom was always the first to stop what she was doing to play catch with the kids. She enjoyed going to see the grandkids play baseball and would go to as many as possible. If the kids had a game and it was close by, she would bring her chair and be there waiting before the kids got there.
She was a long-time member of Fort Caroline Methodist Church which her husband, son, and other young men in the neighborhood helped to build.
She is survived by daughter Robin Harrold (Leonard), sons Alban Hawley (Linda), Joseph Hawley (MaryBeth), seven Grandchildren: Heather (Frances), Al (Kelly), Laura (Paul), Bobby (Ashley), Savanna (Brad), Will (CJ), and Dustin (Latricia). She also was blessed with 14 great grandchildren: Casey, Chloe, Samuel, Trey, Tyler, Donavyn, Danika, Willie, Riley, Eivin, Gaelynn, McKenna, Addison and Cooper.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband William Alban Hawley Jr.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Fountains at Mill Cove and Vitas Health Care for their care of our mother.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on March 25, 2021 at the Arlington Park Cemetery, 6920 Lone Star Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32211.
Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what is to be,
A resting place along the road,
To sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
But never meant to stay…
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey’s quicker,
For some the journeys slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We will claim a great reward,
And everlasting peace,
Together with the Lord.
