Scott served in the U.S. Navy and learned his trade as a boiler tender, a role which he would hold at
Naval Station Mayport until his passing. He was mechanically gifted and enjoyed repairing things.
Anyone who needed help with anything needing repairs had only to ask, and Scott was happy to assist.
His greatest passion was motorcycling and planning road trips; he would spend hours poring over maps,
virtually exploring the back roads of the Appalachian Mountains as well as interesting routes up and
back. He was a dedicated member of the American Motorcyclist Association and the local American
Legion chapter. Both at work and at home he enjoyed the company of cats, keeping an eye on the
community cats at Mayport and rescuing several of his own. More than anything else he enjoyed the
company of family and good friends, whether motorcycling, smoking meats and preparing any kind of
fabulous meal, tailgating at Jacksonville Jaguars games, and watching hockey and drag racing. Also, an
avid golfer and shooter, Scott loved time on the links with his father and friends, and practicing at gun
ranges with his nephews.
He is survived by his son, Joshua Caiola (Kaitlyn), his granddaughter, Amelia Mae (Millie), his grandson,
Noah, his sister, Laura Smothers, and three nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Florence Harrold, and sister, Sandra Moore.
Family and friends give many thanks to the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, for their thorough diagnostics and
care given to Scott during his struggle with his challenging case. Thank you to the American Legion Post
283 and the Patriot Guard Riders for swiftly responding to our call for a motorcycle with a sidecar, so we
could take Scott on his last ride, doing what he loved, and for the honor of presenting him with a Quilt of
Valor. Many thanks also to close friends Charity and Garry Butts. Charity provided Scott company during
his illness and all oversight of his insurance filings and paperwork. Garry completed the full remodel of
Scott’s master bathroom to accommodate his needs, and any needed repairs in his home. Finally, we
give many thanks to Community Hospice for their compassion and care in Scott’s final days. They
provided tremendous support for Laura, Josh, Charity, Garry, and Kim (close family friend).
Scott’s Celebration of Life will take place on November 6, 2021 at 1pm, at the American Legion located at 9459 Ft. Caroline Rd, Jacksonville, Fl 32225. In lieu of flowers, there will be a collection, set up on the day of the celebration, to accommodate a memorial to be placed on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Scott’s memory. He loved the parkway, and it was one of his favorite places in our world.
