Sara Jean "Sally" Kenaston

Sally Kenaston passed away on September 12, 2013, in Jacksonville.

She was born on August 3, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Hampton Ray Kenaston, Jr. and Maurine Bulow Kenaston. She graduated from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Tulane University, New Orleans. She made her career in social work.

She was very active in the Jacksonville Community. Sally dearly loved her bridge groups! She thoroughly enjoyed volunteering with Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library. She was also an active member of Assumption Catholic Church, where she operated the parish gift and book store every Saturday evening for several years. She was an active member of AAUW for 50 years, receiving an Honorary Life Membership in 2009. She served on the AAUW board, Jacksonville branch, for 48 years and was its President for six years. She was President of Health and Welfare Council and a member of several professional associations and executive boards, including NASW. She was named the Most Outstanding Civic Leader by the Civic Roundtable of Jacksonville in 2008.

Sally had a very giving heart. Besides being generous with her time, Sally greatly enjoyed sending gifts to the children in the family, and had a fun tradition of including special trinkets for the siblings of the birthday child. Sally deeply loved her family and friends, and was blessed by the many warm and caring people who have shown love and dedication to her for years and especially in her final weeks on Earth.

Sally is survived by her brother, William Kenaston and wife Ruby of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and by her sister’s husband, Kenneth High of Lake Jackson, Texas. She is also survived by four nieces and nephews (Cynthia Sarles, Linda Carey, Scott Kenaston, and Stephen High), eight great-nieces and great-nephews (Katherine Drumm, Tim Carey, Will Carey, David Sarles, Melina Sarment, John Carey, Sam Kenaston and Michael High), one great-great-nephew (Luke Drumm), and one great-great-niece (Elizabeth Drumm), in whose lives she played a very important part. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janice High, her nephew Mark Kenaston, and her second mother Nancy Kenaston.

Funeral services will be at Assumption Catholic Church, Jacksonville, at 2403 Atlantic Blvd, on Saturday, September 28, at 11:30 a.m., with Fr. Fred Parke officiating. A lunch reception will follow at the church. She will thereafter be laid to rest at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.
