Sam graduated from Alfred I. Dupont High School in Jacksonville, FL and later attended Jacksonville University where he studied business. Sam worked at the Hamilton Collective Plate Factory but the bulk of his career was at his alma mater, Jacksonville University, where he was a Senior Programmer/Analyst at the time he retired.
He had many dear friends he enjoyed traveling with. He spent a lot of time in his yard where he enjoyed gardening and then sitting on the porch drinking lemonade enjoying the view. His hobbies included digital photography, listening to music, genealogy, playing piano and riding his motorcycle. Sam had a particular soft spot for cats and was known to name the neighborhood strays and provide them with food when they came by.
While a private person, Sam was a very generous man and served as a good friend and mentor to many. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Ophelia Knight of Jacksonville, FL, three nephews: Dr. Wayne McMillin and his wife Lori of Ada, Oklahoma, Orley McMillin and his wife Lynna of Enid, Oklahoma, and Ray Wheeler of Macclenny, FL; and many great nephews and nieces.
A graveside service for Sam will be held Friday, February 11, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
