Pepere… my memories go deep and wide.  I think of many things when I think about you!  How joyous you were!  How infectious your laugh was!  The way your comforting voice boomed above all others in a room!  The mischievous twinkle in your eye when we would all bombard you and holler “Pepere, watch this!  Watch this!   Are you watching?!” And you would always proudly nod and smile at anything us kids would do, and we felt like rock stars for it.  

I have some really wonderful specific memories of you that I’ll always hold close to my heart.  Like you giving Jenny and I your old trucking log books, so we could “play office” and pretend we were important secretaries!  And you would always play right along!  

Every single Christmas, I make my entire family watch the old black and white version of the movie Scrooge… it became my favorite years ago when you were sitting in your recliner at the “pool house” as we called it and we were visiting and I sat on a pillow by your feet, entranced in this movie.. and I remember during the entire movie, as I would “ooh” and “ahh” at all the cool parts, you would do your jolly booming laugh and say “see!  Keep watching!”  That movie makes me instantly think of you.  

One of my latest memories is also one of my favorite memories.   I asked you how you and Oma met.   The way your eyes lit up and you gazed over at her before sharing with me..  my goodness… the smile told a thousand stories.. but you told me that you asked Oma to go to the movies.  And Oma told you that when you can learn German, and THEN ask her, she might go, lol!  Oh, I love this story so much.   I said, well Pepere, what did you do when Oma told you that?!  And you looked at me like I just asked you how many aliens exist!  Your eyes got big in that Pepere way that they do and you said “DUH.  I went and learned German and came back and asked her!”  Haha!  

I love you Pepere.  I wish I had a chance to tell you that more.   


Uncle Roger will always hold a special place in my heart. I felt safe when i was with him. He made me see there is true loving marriages. Seeing him n auntie continued to grow together n smile at each other.  After being apart from them for many yrs when  I came in contact my heart was overwhelmed with joy. I am ever so grateful they met my husband that I married while he was also in the army. 20yrs later he is my best friend. Thank you God for a wonderful amazing couple I can say is my family. Rip  uncle Roger.

A person will have many titles throughout their life. Son, brother, cousin. Husband, Father, uncle. Soldier, colleague, friend. I called him Pepere. French Canadian for grandfather. 
Growing up, pepere was the strong grandfather who could lift heavy things, drive across the country in a big rig, and eat an arm’s length of hot weiners (IYKYK!) 
Pepere was the guy who you’d look to for directions on the road. He always knew and recommended the prettiest and most scenic routes. I’ll think of him every time I travel specific roads.  
Pepere knew when the bakery took the bread out of the oven, because he would tell you ‘they were just taking it out of the oven when I bought it!’ [Insert eyebrow wiggles and smack his lips!]
Pepere was a pro at making cartoon character noises. Especially Donald Duck and Goofy. How lucky that my own children were able to hear his impressions! 
Pepere liked his music. Doo-wop, classic country, German music. I specifically recall him singing (with a very nice singing voice!) Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline. 
I will forever be grateful for having pepere as my grandfather. And especially grateful that my own children had the opportunity to love him just as much as I do.
