Robert was born in Jacksonville Florida on May 30th, 1962 to Bob and Joyce McCracken. Robert’s first job was after school at Busters Auction House as a runner. He later worked at a saw mill, “slinging lumber,” to help support his family. Robert served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps beginning in December, 1980, where he earned the Rifle Expert Badge, Letter of Appreciation, Meritorious Mast and Good Conduct Medal. In December 1982, he married his high school sweetheart, Lola Cowan. His military job as a Field Automotive Mechanic prepared him for work after leaving the Marines. “Turning wrenches” eventually found him working at the University of North Florida, where he advanced to Supervisor, Superintendent, then finally Physical Facilities Manager over Vehicle Maintenance, Grounds Crew, Recycle/Refuse and Irrigation. Robert retired after 35 years at UNF.
Robert loved being active and he had many passions. He loved sailing, hiking, motorcycle and bicycle riding, surfing, gardening, camping, running and generally being outdoors. Robert enjoyed owning several sailboats and even lived aboard a boat for 5 years with his family. When he moved back to land, he discovered a love for planting things and created a beautiful landscape around his home. He was talented at building and fixing things and would often help out when someone was in need. He was a youth leader for many years and loved getting involved with church activities, mission trips and having game nights, but the one thing that he was most passionate about was his family. He enjoyed attending softball games, band concerts and other activities with his girls and he tried his best to nurture his relationships, making time for those he loved.
Robert is survived by his wife, Lola McCracken, daughters, Robin Adams (James) and Courtney McCracken (David) and Granddaughter, Theo Wren McCracken, sisters, Julie Pape (Rick) and Jody Morgan (Jimmy) with many nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Family and friends are invited to share in the celebration of Robert’s life on Saturday, May 4th at 12:00 PM at Mill Cove Church, 8510 Fort Caroline Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32277
