Robert Earl Lloyd, Jr., age 87, died Sunday, March 12, 2023, following a brief illness. A native of Bridgeport, CT, he lived there until age 10 when the family moved to Miami, FL. The first in his family to attend college, Bob graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering in 1958. Bob worked three part-time jobs to pay his own way through college. Hired by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) straight out of the UF placement office, he stayed for 38 years. He eventually became the Director of Customer Service for the company. With the study of history and antique musical boxes as a life-long avocation, he worked part-time (after retirement) for FPL to assist in the establishment of an FPL company museum. Some said he qualified for this position as a “company old-timer with loads of institutional memory.” Bob was an avid Gator fan. So obsessed that he was even asking family to check Gator scores only two days before he passed. He reluctantly grew to have a deep affection for Florida State University as his daughters both graduated from FSU (one from the law school and one with a Masters in Social Work), and as two of his grandchildren are current FSU undergraduate students. To his last day Bob held out hope that his youngest grandchild will one day be a Gator. That deep affection for FSU only went so far – It did not apply to any games between UF and FSU. His grandmother, Catherine O’Brian, emigrated alone from County Waterford, Ireland to the United States in 1880 at age 20, traveling in steerage across the Atlantic Ocean. Several of Bob’s aunts and uncles served in the United States Military as soldiers or nurses in World War II. Bob loved The United States of America and had a deep and abiding love for this country. He had a life-long hobby of the study of World War II. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mary Lloyd and his sister, Peggy Lloyd. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Susan Lipscomb Lloyd, of Jacksonville; his children Marianne Lloyd Aho (Wesley) of Jacksonville; and Colleen Lloyd Rodriguez (Dulcilio) of Jacksonville; and grandchildren, Jake, Justin, Claire, and Nathan (Jacksonville). In addition, he is survived by his sisters Ileen Jervis (Beverly Hills, FL) and Betty Rhodes (Orlando), and several nieces and nephews, including his very special nephew Tom Jervis (Miami). Per his wishes, there will be a very small family service in Jupiter, Florida at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Susan Lloyd requests consideration of a memorial in honor of Bob Lloyd at The LJD Jewish Family & Community Services, 8540 Baycenter Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32256 or to your favorite charity. Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home on San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida.
