Robert Mitchell Bacon, 89, passed peacefully from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Mitch was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1935, to Robert Howard Bacon and Octavia Ruth Mitchell Bacon.
He graduated from Marietta High School then attended North Georgia College. Mitch was an ambitious young man and completed many correspondence courses related to personnel administration, military justice, shore patrol and seven courses directly pertaining to the yeoman specialty.
Mitch served for twenty-two years in the United States Navy and received many commendations for his administrative skills, career counseling, record keeping, and other roles during his service to these United States. Mitch was also a talented baseball player through college and at Pearl Harbor while in the Navy.
He was also an avid golfer that won many tournaments. Mitch was very competitive, as one of his grandsons said, “Papa didn’t play golf, he slayed golf.” The golf stories are many and were also a wonderful time of family reunion whether in Smyrna or Palatka.
After he retired from the US Navy, Mitch went back to college and graduated in 1983 from Jones College of Jacksonville with a business degree. He worked for Haskell Construction and then for First Baptist Church for fifteen years before retiring due to health concerns.
Mitch was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Octavia Bacon, his brother, Fred Bacon and his sister, Nancy Stanley as well as his youngest daughter, Beverly Sharpe.
He is survived by his faithful, adoring wife of sixty five years, Carolyn Hulsey Bacon of Jacksonville, FL, his daughter Vicki Montgomery and her husband Stuart of Coral Springs, FL, his son Chris Bacon and his wife Cindy of Jacksonville; five grandchildren and their spouses Casey and Dustin Morgan, Cullen and Sydney Montgomery, Christy and Brandon Scott, Carson and Emily Montgomery, and Taylor and Andrew Lackie; and nine great grandchildren with number ten due in January.
We appreciate Community Hospice of Jacksonville and the Veterans Administration for providing support and care in his final months. We also appreciate so many friends, neighbors and family who have provided so much help and love.
