Mathieson, “Matt” Richard J. Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy, Retired, passed away January 20, 2012. Matt was born on December 24, 1933 in Helena, Montana. Matt was a member of the 1953 Graduating Class of Anchorage High School, Anchorage, Alaska. Matt served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years. He retired from the Navy in 1977 and began work with COJ/JEA and retired a second time after 20 years of service. Matt was predeceased by his daughter Bonnie J Myers. Matt is survived by his wife of 51 years, Norma; daughters Cindy Mathieson, Nanette (John) Pavek; three grandsons, Peter, Thomas and Casey Borenstein. Matt is also survived by his sisters Janet Jefferson of Jacksonville; Sandi (Noel) Birkland of Lewiston, Montana; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Matt was a member of Gateway Girl Scouts for many years and was an active member of North Florida Soaring Society, American Legion Post 137. Matt was proud to serve as the Captain of Civil Air Patrol Squadron 169 Cecil Field Jacksonville, FL. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent in the form charitable donations to Community Hospice of North East Florida. Services for Matt have been entrusted to Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, Florida 32205. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held 11:30 am Friday, February 10, 2012 at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL. 32218.
