Gene was born on October 21,1932 in Camerton, North Carolina. Her family moved to Greenville, South Carolina when she was a child. She graduated from Welcome High School. She attended Furman University where she earned a Diploma in Nursing through Greenville General Hospital. She married her sweetheart, Tom Rosamond, on August 20, 1955. She began her Nursing career working at multiple facilities due to her husband’s occupation with the railroad requiring transfers to several states. Later she worked at Green River Comprehensive Care and at Red Banks Nursing Home in Henderson, Kentucky. Upon moving to Jacksonville she ran Olde Towne Antiques in Orange Park.
Gene was a member of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church for 39 years. During this time she taught a special needs Sunday School class, helped with Wednesday Night Suppers, and helped with the Clothes Closet.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Lucille Stephens, and brother, Jerry Stephens. She is also preceded by her husband of 66 years, Thomas R. Rosamond, who passed away in April, and brother in law Robert Rosamond. She is survived by two children, Denise Sutton and husband Allen of Corydon, KY, Tom Rosamond and wife Beth of Dunnellon, FL. Her four grandchildren Natalie Hankins and her husband Jarrod, of Corydon, KY, Amanda Sutton of Henderson, KY, Ariana Rosamond of Dunnellon, FL, and Nathan Rosamond of Dunnellon, FL. She is survived by two great grandchildren, Reese and Asher Hankins of Corydon, KY, sister in law Mott Rosamond of Greenville, SC, nieces, and nephews.
Relatives and Friends are invited to Gene’s Life Celebration on Wednesday, September 14 from 5:30 -7:30 PM at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 15 at 1:00PM at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, visitation will be at 12:00PM until service time. The service will be officiated by Reverend B.J. Hutto, Ph.D and the Reverend Kyle Reese. Burial will follow at 3:00 at Oaklawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church at 4001 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207 or to Hospice of Jacksonville.
