Mary L'Engle Avent, 94 died peacefully on Sept. 27, 2014 after a brief illness. "Sister" was born on June 15, 1920 in Jacksonville, Florida and was the daughter of the late Camillus S. and Gertrude L'Engle. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Arthur W. Avent, brother Dr. Camillus S. L'Engle Jr., son Kenneth L'E Avent and grandson Arthur W. Avent III.
Surviving Mrs. Avent are sons, Arthur W. Avent Jr. (Pam), Edward C. Avent (Dawn) and Camillus L'E Avent (Judy) and grandchildren Andrew Avent (Heather), Margret Hollingworth (Ray), Caroline, Cam, and John along with three great-grand children.
Sister had an engaging personality, a warm smile and loved helping and doing for many in need. Enjoyed entertaining friends and family at her home in Cedar Key.
Sister graduated from Lee High School, attended Bradford Junior College and graduated from Duke University in 1942. She made her debut with the Jacksonville Debutante Coterie in 1939.
Sister was a faithful member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and it's altar guild, delivered Meals on Wheels, was a retired board member on Children's Home Society, served the Colonial Dames, the Junior League and a charter member of the Wednesday Club, a precursor of today's CIA.
Memorial Service will be held 11:30 AM, Friday, October 3, 2014 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to:
