Marty was born on March 5, 1943 to parents Ben and Ruth Edwards in New Haven, CT, and he lived on the family farm in Woodbridge with sister Anita.
After moving to Florida, Marty attended University of Florida undergrad and law school, where he became president of TEP fraternity. He earned his JD from UF in 1969 and became a lifelong Gator fan. He served as the President of the Jacksonville Gator Club in the late 1970s. Marty worked his way through law school by waiting tables at the Concord Hotel in upstate New York during the summers. In 1969, Marty and friends became entrepreneurs at the Woodstock Music Festival, selling snow cones nonstop to thousands of music fans.
Marty married Betty Sale in 1972 after meeting at Juvenile Court where he served as Public Defender and Betty served as Probation Counselor. He and Betty celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2022. Marty served as an attorney in private practice for 20+ years before transitioning to Instructor and Director of the Pre-Law Program at the University of North Florida. Marty loved advising students at UNF on their future legal careers. He was beloved by his students and his family.
Marty is survived by his wife, Betty, daughter Angela, son Joshua, sister Anita Steinfeld, nephew David Steinfeld (Karen), niece Jules Rudigier (Greg), nephew Steven Steinfeld (Debbie), and dog “Pooch.” He loved traveling the world with his family, especially his sister Anita.
Marty’s generosity and humor touched the lives of all those around him. He will be forever missed.
Services will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at New Center Cemetery inside of Evergreen Cemetery at 11AM.
