Mariam Christine McClure, 89, died December 29, 2021 at Baptist Medical Center after a brief illness. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living member of the Akra Brothers family. Mrs. McClure was married for 66 years to Rufus R. McClure who spent 50 years in multiple positions at The Bolles School. Mariam and Rufus have been parishioners of Assumption and San Jose Catholic Churches. Mariam attended St Paul's High School and was a graduate of Webber College with a degree in Business. She was a member of the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Cummer Museum of Fine Arts, the Southside Women’s Club, and an inaugural patron of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. She also enjoyed hiking, traveling and baking. But the greatest joy of her life was spending time with family. Mariam was a great conversationalist with a contagious smile which made her a friend to many.
She was predeceased by her parents, Philip and Teresa Akra, and her sister Angela Collie (Vance). She is survived by her husband, Rufus McClure; her daughter Maura Donoher and her husband Gary, and her sons Matthew McClure and wife Teri, and Sean McClure and wife Donna; 7 grandchildren, Bryce (Angela), Katie (CJ), Tyler (Nicole), Cory, Kyle, Brittany and Brennan; 2 great-grandchildren, Harper Rose and Michael Eli; and niece Allison Nichols (Dan), and nephew Michael Mims (Karen), and several cousins.
A rosary and visitation will be held at 6pm Wednesday, January 5, 2022 in the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Legacy Lodge, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32207. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30am Thursday, January 6, 2022 in Assumption Catholic Church, where Mariam was married in 1956, at 2403 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, FL by Rev. Eric Stelzer and assisted by Rev. Conrad Cowart. Internment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Charities.
