He moved to Jacksonville at the age of 10 and graduated from Englewood High School in 1964 and then the University of Florida in 1968. He then graduated from medical school, University of Miami in 1972.
He did his residency in General Surgery at what was then University Hospital. He was chief resident in his last year. He met the love of his life in the surgical ICU. They married in 1979 and traveled all over the world. He went into the practice with Dr. Santana at Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the F.A.C.S., performed some of the earliest laparoscopic surgical procedures and taught these in Murmansk, Russia.
He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Alice Simpson, Father Laurin Gresham Smith and beloved son, Derek Ryan Smith.
He loved the Florida Gators and had football season tickets for 40 years. He retired in 2015 and spent much of his time with his 4-legged daughter, Lainey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lavonne, and his children: Allison (Rob) Friedrichs, Cheryl (James) Rowe, Alana (Jesse) Smith, and Trevor Smith, as well as his older brother, Larry. He leaves behind six grand and great-grand children, many cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws.
Visitation will be held at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home on Thursday, January 13, 2022 from 5:00pm-7:00pm in the evening. His funeral service will take place at Mandarin Presbyterian Church located at 2501 Loretto Rd., Jacksonville FL 32223 on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 11:00AM.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mandarin Presbyterian Church or the Wounded Warrior Project.
