Josephine Mizell, age 100 years old, was born in Palatka, Florida to William “Billy” A. Williams and Amy Williams on December 4, 1921 and passed away March 19, 2022. She graduated from Palatka High School in 1939 and married William Jackson “Bill” Mizell on August 23, 1941. They were married for 56 years before Bill passed in 1997. She was a homemaker and mother, Baptist Sunday School teacher, and collected for the March of Dimes and American Cancer Society. She also donated blood until well into her 90’s.
Josephine was the 4th of 6 children, 5 girls and 1 boy and she was the last of the siblings to pass away. Having celebrated her 100th Birthday, Jo had seen the world change in dramatic ways but throughout all those years it was the people in her life that mattered most. She lived her life expressing that love by taking care of all of those around her and especially her family. She embraced each of the special moments in all of those lives by preserving mementos of those occasions in a special drawer. From her certificate of enrollment in Sunday school at age 6 all the way through the announcement of the birth of her most recent great-grandchild this past year. All lovingly saved.
Her reward was a wonderful life that lasted for 100 good years, remaining independently self-sufficient and aware, until the Lord took her in His hands and gave her a dignified and graceful passing at home in her final sleep. A fitting end to a beautiful life.
Jo was survived by daughters Jackie Mooneyham and son-in-law Bill Mooneyham, Joy Linehan and son-in-law Patrick Linehan, son DeWitt Mizell and daughter-in-law Merleen Mizell wife to deceased son Billy; and ex-daughter-in-law Sharon Mizell; 5 grandchildren, Jeri, Eric, Crystal, Megan and Amanda; 10 great-grandchildren Jenna, Griffin, Grier, James, Ian, Silas, Cason, Ryan, McKenzie and Amelia.
She is preceded in death by husband Bill Mizell, son William Jackson Mizell and granddaughter Teri Ruth Burrows.
A visitation for Josephine will be held Friday, March 25, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and burial at 2:00 PM at Etoniah Church cemetery.
