A Jacksonville native, Joseph attended Andrew Jackson High School. After graduating in 1957, he went on to serve his country as a member of the United States Army. After receiving an honorable discharge, Joseph went on to continue a lifelong career as a member of his hometown Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office as a Sergeant, and as a Captain for Duval County Public Schools Police Department. A selfless individual, Joseph devoted his life to the service and protection of others throughout his career as a law enforcement officer.
Aside from his love of serving others, Joseph was a loving brother, father, uncle, grandfather, Godfather, and husband to his wife, Mary of 33 years. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Mary and her son, Gregory R. Hough II Esq. and (Paula), and their son Nicholas. He is also survived by his son, Joseph Raymond Saffer Jr.; grandchildren, Josalin Saffer, Shannon Saffer, Samantha Saffer, Kendall Leduc (Joshua), and Lauren Mitchell; Godchildren, Pamela Jensen-Young (Michael), MaryAlice Young, and Izabelle Young; brother, Albert Saffer (Judy); and sister Florence Jensen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Joseph is predeceased in death by his two daughters, Brenda Saffer and Melinda Hause.
A visitation will be held Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.
