Joseph Selim Hasbani, 82, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2013 at Memorial Hospital Jacksonville. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt to Alice and Selim Hasbani. He attended College Patriarcal Grec-Catholique grammar/high school and obtained his M.D. degree at the University of Cairo in Cairo, Egypt.
He entered the United States in 1959 and moved to Jacksonville Florida to complete his internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital. From 1961 to 1964, he finished his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Jacksonville Hospitals Educational Program. While completing his Internship, he met Harriett Spradley and they married in Lake City on June 2, 1962. He went into private practice from 1964-1997 and acquired his citizenship in 1967. He was a member of the Duval County Medical Society, Florida Medical Association, American Medical Society, Jacksonville Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, American Fertility Society, The Jacksonville Hospital Educational Program, Southern Medical Association, a Fellow in the American College of OB/GYN and Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was an active member of Memorial Hospital Jacksonville for many years and had practicing privileges at many area hospitals. He received awards from the Sports Medicine Program, “We Care Jacksonville Network”; he was a Volunteer Heathcare Provider and a Volunteer for Interscholastic Pre-Participation Screening. He left Obstetrics in 1978 to practice Gynecology only. He joined Jacksonville Center for Reproductive Medicine in 1997 and continued his practice there until his death.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Harriett Spradley Hasbani, his sisters Nadia Hasbani and Simone Hasbani Bacos. He is survived by his two daughters Holly Hasbani Peery (Rusty) and Suzanne Hasbani Kirby (John) and his three grandchildren, Hollisan, Joseph and Jackson Peery.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Hendricks Avenue Chapel. Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research.
