John Kenneth Mackie departed this world on Friday, September 6, 2024 at the age of 60. He is the beloved husband of Karen Barletta and the loving father of Emma Mackie. He was also the pet parent of dogs Angel and Woo Woo. His departure leaves an unfillable void in their lives, yet they find comfort in the memories and love that they shared.
John was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada on May 26, 1964. He was the youngest of three children born to Kenneth and Mary Mackie (both deceased). He married his wife Karen in 2004 and welcomed his cherished daughter in 2005. He is sadly missed by his brothers David (Joane Bérubé) and Stewart (Meena) as well as his nieces and nephews Jay, Jena (Chris), Claire, Elise, and Philip. He is also sadly missed by his in-laws: Doris and Bob Barletta, Debbie Shust (Bill), Michael Barletta (Carrie), Mari Shust, Matthew Shust.
John was an amazing person. He had a great sense of humor and a day did not go by without some joke being said. He was artistic (mostly painting and sculpting but excelled at any artistic endeavor he chose to do), creative, intelligent, talented at wood working, a golfer, a league-playing pool player, a world traveler, and an online gamer/streamer. He was a wonderful father and spent many hours building items for the perfect birthday parties for his daughter Emma or playing games with her. He was a wonderful husband who willingly put holes in walls to build something his wife wanted. His favorite color was blue. He converted to Catholicism after his marriage to Karen. He traveled the world with his family to places such as the Canadian Rocky Mountains, various places throughout the USA, Italy and Egypt. He had a great passion for video games and streamed them on his own channel at www.twitch.tv/karlkolchak.
John had a bachelor’s degree in Geography from Carleton University and a diploma in Computer Programming from Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology. He had a varied career, most recently the Vice President – CCA/CMRA at US Bank. He had his PMP (Project Management Professional) designation. He also worked as a Senior Project Manager at FSV Payment Systems, Application Manager at Voya Financial, Senior Development Manager at CitiStreet, Consultant at Computer Horizons, and a System Engineer at EDS Canada. A summary of messages sent from his co-workers describe him well: John was passionate about standing up for good ideas, a genuinely nice person, compassionate, thoughtful, always had a smile for others, and was a great example of a servant leader (he even got his team matching bowling shirts for their off-site building event).
