He was born on December 19, 1927, in Lumberport, West Virginia, to John M. Cunningham, Sr. and Opal Alkire Cunningham.
Jack first worked at the family-owned Cunningham Brothers Pontiac in Lumberport. He met his first wife, Phyllis J. Cunningham, while on a fishing trip in Havelock, Ontario, Canada. They raised their three boys while moving between Shinnston, West Virginia; Ontario, Canada; and Jacksonville, Florida. Jack and Phyllis divorced in 1978.
Later in 1978, he married Anita L. Cunningham, who worked at Genuine Parts Company (NAPA), where Jack was an accountant in charge of Jobber Accounts. After retiring from NAPA, he enjoyed an encore career at Sam’s Club in North Jacksonville.
Jack enjoyed watching baseball and football, boating, and fishing – especially with his three boys. He and Anita traveled in the Southeastern United States and enjoyed attending country music concerts and dancing together.
He is survived by his wife, Anita L. Cunningham, (Jacksonville) his sister, Virginia Alice Dowd, (Nashville) and his sons and daughters-in-law, John Matthew Cunningham, III and Judy Cunningham (MacClenny); George S. Cunningham and Mary Beth Cunningham (Jacksonville); and Phillip Spencer Cunningham and Carol Cunningham (Campbellford, Ontario, Canada) as well as his step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Darlyn Finch Kuhn and Bradley C. Kuhn (Orlando). He is also survived by his nieces and nephew, the children of Virginia Alice Dowd: Brenda, Janet, and Jay Dowd.
Surviving grand and step-grandchildren are Jocelyn Cunningham, George J. Cunningham, Steven Procter Peterborough, Ray Crocker, Krista Breeding, Kara Jones, Rachel Finch-Bates, Railan Finch-Bates, and Meschelle Kuhn.
His great-grandchildren are Taylor Bowles, Tyler Cunningham, Brandon Cunningham, Noah Breeding, Abigail Ott, Teagion Jones, and Robert Jones.
He was predeceased by his grandsons, Phillip Spencer Cunningham, Jr. and John M. Cunningham, IV, as well as his step-grandson Robert Amos Lundin, Jr.
Jack was a Trustee at Oak Ridge Baptist Church of Jacksonville, and was a member in good standing of the Freemasons.
The family will receive friends and loved ones for a visitation on Monday, August 24, 2015 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at Oakridge Baptist Church, 7914 Ridge Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32208. The funeral service will be Monday, August 24, 2015 at Oakridge Baptist Church with the interment immediately following at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy, Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32205.
