Our dear mother Joann Hodges Roberts passed away on March 13th, at the age of 89. She was admired for her sharp wit, good taste and a keen sense of style. She is survived by three children (Catherine Roberts Duncan, Deering John Roberts, and William McAfee Roberts), nine grandchildren, and one dear Jack Russell Terrier. Joann was predeceased by her parents, Miner Ray Hodges, Sr. and Willie Mae Jones Hodges of Milledgeville, Georgia, her brother, Miner Ray Hodges, Jr., and her son, Arch Waters Roberts, Jr.
Joann attended Randolf Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She eventually settled in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida where she lived for 45 years. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where she served as the head of the altar guild for several years.
Joann was thoughtful, kind, and generous. She loved to travel and enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening and an amazing collection of dollhouses, each of which she designed and decorated. Long admired for her athleticism, daring, and grace, Joann finally succumbed to the demands of gravity and passed peacefully in her sleep, after another day full of amazing physical feats and altruistic activities. She will be remembered and missed by many, and our lives were richer in her company.
