Lucy O’Neal, affectionately known by everyone as “Gonnie”, went home to the Lord on November 9, 2017, after a brief illness. Lucy was born to George Pierce Curry Colvin and Jessie Lenetta McMichael Colvin in Thomson, Georgia on March 1, 1918, the 4th of their 7 children. The family moved to Jacksonville in 1931 and Lucy graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1935. She and her husband moved to Southside in 1937 and then raised her 3 children while pursuing her lifelong passions of gardening, cooking and entertaining everyone with her stories of her life experiences that spanned over 99 years. Lucy taught decoupage, was the President of the School Safety Patrol, and was the Welcome Wagon representative welcoming new families that moved to Southside. Up until her very last days, she educated her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends with her amazing recollection of family events and experiences.
She was preceded in death by her daughters, Nancy Ellen Weaver, and Susan O’Neal Gay. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Chupp (Charles), and her son, Michael O’Neal, Sr. (Helen). She is survived by 7 grandchildren, Carrie Chupp Harper (Kyle), Charles Chupp, Jr. (Mary), Todd Chupp (Stacy), Jennifer O’Neal Walworth (Brent), Mary Helen Stewart (Brian), Angela Abend (Larry), and Michael O’Neal, Jr. (Kylie). Lucy also had 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who loved her dearly.
The celebration of her life will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 17, 2017, at Southside United Methodist Church, 3120 Hendricks Ave., where Lucy was a charter member. Her love of life, her strength in the face of adversity and her humor will be missed by all who met her.
