James Mason Shoemaker, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on July 2nd surrounded by loving family. Mr. Shoemaker was born September 28, 1922 and grew up in Sanford, FL with his family of six. Before entering the Univ. of Florida, he was interrupted by answering the bugle call for WW II, where he served with honor in the European theatre. Upon his return, he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, which initiated his long career as a Professional Engineer until his final days. He was a proud member of the UF Grand Guard and sported the orange and blue proudly. Jim enjoyed playing golf, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends. Affectionately called “SR,” Jim is pre-deceased by his wife, Martha Hopson Shoemaker. He is survived by their sons; Jim (Leeman), David, and Gary (Susan); six grandchildren, Scott, Jacquelin, Wesley, Philip, Paige, and Kevin; seven great grandchildren, Hannah, Sydney, Eli, Mason, Drew, Max, and Rain. A Visitation for family and well-wishers will be held Wednesday, July 5th from 6-8 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. The family wishes to praise the services of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida for their extraordinary commitment and the care and comfort of ALL family members during their time of need and encourage any support we can offer back.
