Helen Jean Zapf, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 24. She was born on December 24,1931 in Miami, Florida to the late Ralph and Kemper Bagwell. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, John (Jack) Thomas Zapf. Helen earned her degree in Education from the University of Miami and began her career teaching second grade. She left classroom teaching to raise her family. She continued to nurture young minds as a Sunday School teacher for many years at North Shore Baptist Church in Miami. Helen also devoted her time to fundraising for the Women’s Cancer Association at the University of Miami, demonstrating her compassionate spirit and commitment to helping others.
Helen and Jack cherished over fifty years of life in Miami Shores before retiring to Jacksonville, Florida. They embraced their new community in Deercreek and became involved with Deermeadows Baptist Church. Helen was also active as a PEO sister. Helen’s warm hospitality shone through as she entertained family and friends, making holidays especially memorable. Known for her delightful “Hello Dollies,” she always had a sweet treat ready for anyone in need of a little chocolate joy.
She is survived by her brother Ralph Eugene (Mary) Bagwell, her children: Julie (Bob) Hynes and John (Judy) Zapf, her grandchildren: Katie (Brian) Graden, James Hynes, Gretchen (Shay) Jacobs, and Jackson (Amanda) Hynes and three great granddaughters. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Helen’s Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Deermeadows Baptist Church, 9780 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, FL 32256. She will be laid to rest at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.
